Help test the new (beta) Camelizer extension for Firefox!
I’ve put together a test build of the Camelizer for everyone to play with. It lacks polish somewhat but should be functional on all supported sites, including Amazon.
Install the Camelizer v1.3a – URL updated to avoid any confusion as to the safety of the extension file.
If you see this bar when you click the link above, click the “Allow” button to continue installing the Camelizer. All this means is that you’re installing it from our server instead of Mozilla’s.
![]()
The extension is activated either by a toolbar button you add (right click on your Firefox toolbar and click “Customize”) or by the statusbar button the extension creates automatically. Clicking either button will toggle the Camelizer pane which now lives below the content of all web pages you view.
Here’s a product link for you to try it on: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000144I2Q
As you’ll see, the chart automatically sizes itself to the browser window and its own content area, which can be resized vertically by dragging the black/white line above the chart. (Resize it horizontally by resizing your web browser.) Clicking the chart will open the Camel product page in a background tab.
Planned changes:
- Better error messages / an intro screen
- Tooltip for when you mouseover the chart saying “click here to view the camel product page” or something
- Making the add-on description say something more than “description” in the add-ons dialog
Please share all ideas, bugs, and other feedback that you have — and remember, this is a test version and probably contains bugs. Thanks!

I like how this new extension works…the addition of the icon to the status bar is a nice feature. And now you’re not “modifying” Amazon’s pages, so hopefully they will be happy. I think it works great, and I’m so glad to have my Camelizer working on Amazon again!!!
Badmammajamma 2010/06/30 at 3:10 pm
I am unable to install because it keeps coming as an inoperable page.
Steve 2010/06/30 at 3:50 pm
Thank you! I’ve really missed using Camelizer on Amazon, and it looks great! Any way you could add a “track this product” link without having to go to the camelcamelcamel website?
Dan 2010/06/30 at 4:52 pm
Badmammajamma: What browser are you using and which country are you browsing from? Can you be more specific about the error message(s)?
Dan 2010/06/30 at 4:54 pm
Steve: I’m happy that you like it! Right now it is more important to get the Camelizer for Chrome up and running, but eventually yes it would be sweet if we could create price watches from directly within the Camelizer pane.
Badmammajamma 2010/06/30 at 6:14 pm
I’m running Firefox 3.6.6, I’m in the US and the error message was: Oops! Firefox could not connect to stashbox.org. Also my Malware kept saying it was a malicious site.
Thanks.

Comments: Love it! Nice to finally get back on Amazon for my price history :) It is beta so I know you are in the testing phase but sometimes it does get a little buggy and lacks in between products or if I resize the camelizer screen. Also, it would be nice to have an X button (close screen button) instead having to click the camelizer icon. Lastly, I think using the entire width of the screen is too much. My window for viewing the product is too small to really navigate the rest of the product page. Maybe if you had the screen half the width of it (or even less) that way you could incorporate the camelizer with clicking and viewing multiple product pages. Because right now I am opening and closing the program just to see the price and then view the product. Kind of a choppy shopping experience.
With all that said, thanks Dan for all your hard work with this and please take my suggestions as constructive only. =]

Great, I defended your extension in my review of AmazonAssist on Mozilla, and now you’re telling me to install your beta from a site listed as a dangerous threat by many well-known virus scanners (Enter stashbox.org into the box at URLVoid.com and see what I mean).
Dan 2010/06/30 at 9:50 pm
billybliss and Badmammajamma: I’ve updated the Camelizer URL in the blog post to one hosted on the camelcamelcamel server. Stashbox is just a file hosting site I run which has unfortunately been blacklisted by some people because viruses have been uploaded there. There was nothing malicious about my URL though, nor Stashbox in general. =)
The updated link is: http://s3.camelcamelcamel.com/camelizer-1.3a.xpi

tmk: We hear you on the X button: toggling using only status or tool bar buttons can be slightly painful. As far as screen resolution and Camelizer width/height are concerned, we’re working on alleviating that pain for users with low resolutions but that will probably have to wait until after we get a test version of the Camelizer for Google Chrome out the door; we’ve gotta get everyone a taste before diving in more deeply on each separate version.
I’m glad you are liking it so far! And no problem, Camel farming is what I do. Also, your suggestions are quite constructive and appreciated.

Realized that my camelizer extension wasn’t working the past couple of day and was really bummed. glad i took some time on your site and found your current fix. i’m so glad it’s working again on amazon. i do most of my online purchasing through amazon and your add-on is the best, i use it all the time. thanks for such a great product.
Dan 2010/07/01 at 7:27 pm
Eugene: We are happy to hear that. Thanks for commenting!

Really glad to have it back. Thanks for working to come up with something that would play by their rules. Is it possible to have it auto-hide on pages that aren’t supported? Especially when switching tabs. The extremely anal part of me would also prefer if the statusbar icon could go away (or at least grey itself out) when you’re not a supported page.
Dan 2010/07/01 at 7:37 pm
Brian: Those are really good ideas. I think both auto-hiding and icon greying are quite possible, and would enhance the Camelizer’s UI.

I like the new Camelizer extension… I like the effort in finding a win-win resolution for both parties. I have a lofty suggestion – I have a dual monitor setup, so instead of showing the chart below the product page, would it be possible to have a launch camelizer into a separate window on monitor #2? More information could be shown instead of just a 1-month span of the chart… maybe options to stretch to 3-6 month chart like on the camelcamelcamel.com website? Or having the option to manage price tracking on the page?
Dan 2010/07/03 at 1:51 am
Glenn: It is possible to have a separate window but I can’t promise anything at the moment. And Camelizer charts show as much data as we have available, so if you see one month then it might be a relatively new (to us) product.
Notbad 2010/07/04 at 4:07 am
This seems functional on Amazon. I’m glad to have it back. I would suggest one aesthetic enhancement: For Amazon, allow me to turn off the “3rd Party used” and “3rc Party new” lines. This setting could be stored in my camel account or in a cookie.
The 3rd Party lines are a distraction for me when I am looking at prices for electronics and general merchandise, which I would never buy used, and for trending, I only need to see Amazon’s price in a single line.
Dan 2010/07/04 at 11:14 am
Notbad: Toggling the price types is very possible, given that we already provide such functionality on Camel product pages. I have wanted this myself, in fact, so thanks for reminding me of it.
Notbad 2010/07/05 at 5:47 am
Dan, I’d like to suggest the feature is profile specific. In other words, I’d rather not have to turn it on and off for each item, but have it stick for everything unless I change it again.
Dan 2010/07/05 at 9:35 am
Notbad: Would that be the Camel user profile or the Firefox user profile that you’re referring to? And good to know, I probably would have just made it session-based and called it good (which we might still have to do if this feature comes before account integration.)
Laertus 2010/07/05 at 12:48 pm
I’m using the new Camelizer icon with Firefox 3.6.7 and it’s working fine so far. The window was a bit big by default but after resizing it’s manageable now. Thanks for putting in the effort to appease Amazon. Camelizer has been very helpful to me in comparing prices.
Notbad 2010/07/05 at 1:10 pm
Probably the easiest way to is to make a cookie in Firefox that remembers the setting. I think a cookie is operating system profile specific. The setting should survive between sessions/reboots, etc.
Right now, there is a way to turn off the lines:
http://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B002WB2KFI
The buttons can be clicked to turn off the 3rd Party lines. If that setting would stick in a cookie that stays between sessions, then it would be functional.
Being connected to the Camel account would be even better, so the setting would follow between computers.
With all this said, even just a way to turn off the lines manually one time would be better than nothing. I think the example:
http://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B002WB2KFI
Shows how much cleaner the chart looks if you turn off the 3rd Party lines (assuming you don’t want that info of course)
Dan 2010/07/05 at 1:31 pm
Notbad: the Overview tab’s chart options are exactly how I was picturing it in the Camelizer! Good call =)

Just installed this on the new FF 4.0 beta. Works fine, except the toolbar icon doesn’t appear in the “Customize” window. This isn’t unique to this plugin, I’ve noticed it with several so it must be an API change or something.
Dan 2010/07/08 at 9:05 pm
Adam: I haven’t tried FF 4.0 yet. I’ll check the docs and see what may have changed on their end, thanks for reporting that bug.
matt 2010/07/10 at 5:27 pm
using FF v2.0.0.20 portable. i click the camelizer button in the status bar. overlay comes up and just sits there with loading… if i switch tabs (for example, to leave feedback here), the camelizer overlay on this page correctly displays “this site or page is not supported by The Camelizer.” However, when i switch tabs back (to check if it finished with that test amazon page), that tab also now INCORRECTLY displays the error msg “site or page not supported message”
Dan 2010/07/10 at 6:39 pm
Matt: Could you please provide some example URLs on Amazon’s site? That would help me debug it.
Though, to be honest, I haven’t even tried FF portable, so that may be a whole other issue…
Thanks for reporting this bug!
matt 2010/07/10 at 8:32 pm
it occurs on all amazon product pages when switching tabs. when i force reload, then it will change to Loading, but it seems to get stuck there too. i have livehttp headers on, but i can’t see what camelizer is doing. if you would prefer to contact me via email, i can help troubleshoot this with you.
p.s. enjoy your vacation. i just drove through ca, or, wa, id, mt, wy, sd last two weeks. incredibly beautiful. although, sometimes boring because the scenery is the same for miles and miles and miles.
Dan 2010/07/10 at 9:56 pm
Matt: livehttpheaders probably will not show requests that happen in the browser “chrome”. For that, you’d probably want Chromebug but that doesn’t provide quite the same functionality.
Thanks! I am enjoying my vacation thus far. I will shoot you an email shortly and hopefully we can figure this thing out.

I prefer the new camelizer to the original, nice work. An add-in option to allow one to change the behavior of the camelizer window from persistent, to automatically dismissed when one navigates away from the item page would be welcome. Alternatively a close button in the upper right corner of the price graph might work well. Also, if the “hot zone” was reduced to a prominent “TRACK” button, it would not as easy to accidentally open multiple camelizer price tracking windows.

Dan, having problems using FF 3.0.4
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4) Gecko/2008102920 Firefox/3.0.4
I get the camel on the bottom bar, and when I click on it, the entire status bar goes away. Also, my page says “working” or “page not supported by camelizer” I have to disable and restart to view any pages after that. :(
Opening up new tabs doesn’t let me view the page or replace the status bar again.
any ideas?
- macbill
Dan 2010/07/13 at 9:36 pm
chris: I’ve already started on the auto-closing feature and I think it is a good idea. I tend to think the Camelizer looks nicer without a TRACK button in its little pane, but I’m open to trying it and seeing how it looks. It may just be that I’ve gotten used to the nice big chart…
Watch for the next beta release and at least one of these changes will be in there.
Dan 2010/07/13 at 9:38 pm
macbill: Wow that is a pretty terrible bug, I’m sorry we’re causing you such pain. I’ll give the Camelizer a shot in Linux on that version of Firefox and see what’s up. Oddly, most of the UI functionality — like the status bar icon — was auto-generated by a Mozilla tool…
